Hiring Freshers
My cousin Siri approached me few weeks ago asking me to refer
her to any job opening that I might have in my organization. I work in an accounts
department of a very big software company. Though I have done my Bachelor of
Arts I maintain a team of professionals who are MBA in Finance graduates and “To
Be Chartered Accountants’”,……I know it’s an Irony but trust me I have managed
them very well and as professionally as possible and always received accolades from my
business partners in US for the good work done.
As usual I asked Siri to send her resume to my email ID. She
has completed her BE computers and is a fresher who has an aggregate of 72% which
in my opinion is excellent. I checked with a friend of mine in a development
team and was advised that they only hire IIT graduates,…….“what the heck”, I
asked what do you to the rest of people
from other colleges who worked so hard to score well and hope to join good
companies as ours, My friend bluntly told that they need to join some small
companies for a year or two and later they will be given an opportunity to try.
I didn’t want to disappoint her so I contacted other
references and at last found an opening for her in a Software testing field for
which she had to contact a third party company for the initial round of
interview. She did well in her first round of interview which was an aptitude
test where you need to show case your skills of the software learning at your
college. Siri did very well in that round and moved to the next round which was
HR round. In this round it will be a face to face interaction with the HR to
understand the candidates’ communication skills, attitude and other aspects.
In the second round she was asked to speak on Movies and
college life. Though the topic is very simple and if it was not an interview
she would have spoken about it for hours. But for some reason she started
feeling nauseated and felt her knees shivering. She hardly opened her
mouth in front of the interviewer and started sweating bullets. The result was
out which she already knew that she did not make it. She started crying when
she got back home.
How many of you out there have faced similar situations
which caused such emotional outbursts.
All I have to tell you guys is that …you spent 15 to 16 years of your
life towards education and never gave your time towards self development or getting
enrolled into self development programs which will empower you to face the realities
of life which is very very harsh.
One needs more than professional qualification to be a
professional. Today’s corporate world is seeking professionals who not only have
the academic skills but also other skills to manage and run the organization at
global standards.
After spending 10 years in the corporate industry and 4
years in a non corporate industry I want to bring along some of my learning
which will help students to develop skills to face interviews.
